And in return the Maori people ceded New Zealand to Queen Victoria, giving her government the sole right to purchase land. Hobson had planned the singing to occur on the 7 of February however on the morning of the 6 of February, 45 chiefs where waiting ready to sing. around noon a ship carrying two officers from H.M.S Herald naval regalia, he was in fact not expecting the chiefs that day and was wearing his dressing gown or (in plain clothes, except his hat) Hone Heke was the first Maori Chief of Ngapuhi to sing the treaty that day. As each chief singed Hobson said " HE IWI TAHI TATOU" WITCH MEANS (WE ARE ONE POEPLE). two chiefs Marupo and Ruhe protested strongly against the treaty as the singing went on they eventually singed the treaty.
